How to Prepare Your Domain for Transfer Out of Cloudflare

If your domain is registered at Cloudflare and you want to move the registration to another registrar (for example, to consolidate domains or hand full control to your own account), here's how to prepare it so the transfer goes smoothly. This is about moving the registration, not just DNS.

Note the 60-day rule: ICANN blocks domain transfers within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. If your domain is newer than that, you'll need to wait.

Before you start

  • Make sure the domain's contact email (the registrant email on file) is one you can access — approval emails go there.
  • Decide your destination registrar and have an account ready there.

Steps at Cloudflare (registrar side)

  1. Sign in to dash.cloudflare.com and select the domain.
  2. Go to the Registration → Manage area (Cloudflare Registrar).
  3. Unlock the domain for transfer (disable the transfer lock).
  4. Get the authorization code (also called the EPP or auth code). Copy it — you'll paste it at the new registrar.
  5. If WHOIS privacy needs to be off for the transfer, toggle it per the new registrar's requirement (you can re-enable it after).

Steps at the new registrar

  1. Start a domain transfer and enter your domain.
  2. Paste the authorization/EPP code from Cloudflare.
  3. Approve the confirmation email sent to your registrant contact address.
  4. The transfer typically completes in a few days; most registrars add a year to your registration on transfer.

Don't lose your DNS in the move

Transferring the registration doesn't automatically carry your DNS records. Before the transfer completes, make sure your DNS records are preserved at the destination (or that Cloudflare's DNS continues to serve them). If Symphony Core manages your DNS, tell us before you transfer so we keep your website and email live throughout.

Key takeaways

  • Unlock the domain and copy the authorization (EPP) code at Cloudflare, then start the transfer at the new registrar.
  • Approve the email sent to your registrant contact address.
  • Coordinate DNS so your site/email don't drop during the move — loop in Symphony Core first.

The exact menu labels shift as Cloudflare updates its dashboard — your Symphony Core contact can screen-share and walk the current screens with you.
